But what is a TIER certification?
Uptime Institute has set up the standard TIER classification system as a tool to efficiently evaluate and compare data center infrastructure, taking into account business needs. In fact, this became the global language for data center ratings. This classification system evaluates data centers consistently: compares unique, tailor-made facilities based on expected infrastructure performance or availability.
TIER certification enables companies to tailor their infrastructure investments in the data center to business goals related to growth and technology strategies. When a company plans to invest heavily in a data center, it is important for a future facility to meet business goals with regard to IT performance and reliability (7/24 in case of availability). At the same time, such an investment must take into account risk management, energy efficiency and costs, ie ROI (investment efficiency).
The classification

- Tier I: Basic infrastructure with one-way power supply, without redundancy (availability: 99,67%)
- Tier II: Some elements of the infrastructure have a reserve (availability: 99,75%)
- Tier III: Infrastructure maintained without ICT systems stopping (availability: 99,98%)
- Tier IV: Flaw-tolerant infrastructure can handle all ICT tools in case of any element failure (availability: 99,99%)
The certification process:
The certification process itself can be seamlessly integrated into a project timeline, but the TIER requirements must be taken into account when designing. Certification of design documents is based on the strict requirements of the mechanical, electrical, structural and on-site elements defined according to TIER standard topology.
Uptime Institute certifies the data center's plans to ensure that the architectural specification, functionality, capacity, availability, and protection of the facility is adequate to the desired level.
Tier certification of design documents is a prerequisite for the certification of the built facility.
